Calling an ambulance immediately means that you can get the treatment
to restore the blood supply to your heart muscle as soon as possible.
In many parts of the country, the paramedics (ambulance staff) may give you the clot busting drugs you need. Some will even transfer you directly to a
specialist centre for similar treatment. The sooner you receive treatment,
the less damage to your heart muscle and the greater your chances of survival.
What the Ambulance Services say
Paul Phillips, Chief Executive Officer of the East Midlands Ambulance Service,
says ambulance services across the UK fully support the British Heart
Foundation campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of heart attacks.
"We welcome any efforts that endeavour to save lives by teaching people how to
identify a possible heart attack and encouraging them to call 999 more quickly."
"People often delay calling us which loses valuable time ultimately putting
their heart and life at risk. We understand that making the call to emergency
services as soon as you experience these symptoms should be your first call to
action which is why this campaign is so important," says Paul.
